San Antonio, TX (February 28, 2007)- Despite over a foot of snow on the ground back home in Wisconsin, 5K Motorsports is ready for the 2007 ASA Challenge Division season to begin! Owner Ken Wills has had a busy off-season adding the ingredients needed to make a run at the Rookie of the Year and Championship titles on the ultra-competitive ASALMS circuit. Veteran driver Kris Stump is the latest addition that also included Crew Chiefs Chris Purdy and Rollie Christman. Driver Derek Thorn is back to run the entire Challenge Division this year! Both teams and drivers are revved up for the Alamo 200 at San Antonio Speedway this Saturday March 3rd.
Challenge Series Driver Derek Thorn
This twenty year old from Lakeport, California had an impressive start to his ASA Late Model Series career last season posting two top five finishes in his only two starts. Derek raced his way out of the obscurity of the bullrings of Northern California to lead 137 laps at Nashville last season. “After working with Ken Wills and the guys at 5K last season I knew these were the guys I wanted to race with this year,” said Thorn during a recent radio interview. Derek is a contender for the Pat Bourdow Rookie of the Year Title in the ASA Late Model Series Challenge division.
Challenge Series Driver Kris Stump
Veteran driver Kris Stump joins 5K Motorsports after a successful run with Allen-Hock Motorsports. “I’m really excited about this great opportunity that Ken Wills and everyone at 5K has given me,” said the enthusiastic Stump. His fifth place finish last season in the Challenge Division standings included four top five finishes. Kris finished second in last year’s Alamo 200! This twenty-six year old from Tipp City, Ohio is a threat to win at any track big or small.
Remember the Alamo 200
San Antonio Speedway is the home to the second annual Alamo 200 this Saturday March 3rd. 5K Motorsports drivers Derek Thorn and Kris Stump are among the favorites as the stars and cars of the ASA Late Model Series invade this super fast half-mile track! Speedway President and Promoter Terry Dickerson has made this one of the favorite stops for teams on the ASA Late Model Series tour! Last year 5K Motorsports driver Kris Stump was second and Owner/Driver Ken Wills scored a strong eighth place finish in the Alamo 200
5K Motorsports Owner Ken Wills
Ken Wills is a racer and knows what it takes to compete! Wills stepped out of the car and into the owner’s role full time late last year. “We are dedicated to competing as a championship level team,” said Wills. 5K Motorsports will have Derek Thorn and Kris Stump competing in the ASA Late Model Series Challenge division and rookie Alex Kennedy running full time in the Northern division for 2007.
Derek’s Crew Chief Chris Purdy
This former track champion racer comes over to 5K Motorsports from two-time ASA Late Model Series championship team WalTom Racing. Chris has worked for NASCAR owner Joe Gibbs in his driver development program.
Kris’ Crew Chief Paul “Rollie” Christman
This veteran Crew Chief has over twenty-years experience at all levels of racing. Rollie joins 5K Motorsports after working with NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Hendrick Motorsports the past five years.
